Councillors Sandy Lay, Colin Campbell and Ryk Downes have funded CCTV in Otley and Yeadon for another year.
The 8 cameras cost £18,048 pa and are paid for by the councillors’ community wellbeing money. As this pot saw a reduction in its funding this year, the cameras now take up more than half the money available to the councillors for projects across the ward.
Cllr Sandy Lay (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said, “The cost of these CCTV cameras continues to concern me but we are left with little choice but to renew the contract. With the reduction of PCSOs proposed for Otley and Yeadon, CCTV is likely to become more important than ever.”
Cllr Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) commented, “With this money now constituting over half of our wellbeing funding this year, it is likely that we will have trouble finding money for all the other deserving causes.”
Cllr Sandy Lay continued, “Despite this, I am still pleased that we have found the money to continue funding these cameras for this year. Security is high on residents’ agendas and these cameras go a great way to making people feel safer.”
