Local community groups in both Otley and Yeadon were given a year’s worth of free community centre use thanks to Lib Dem councillors Sandy Lay, Colin Campbell and Ryk Downes.
The free usage over several sites is worth over £50,000 and will allow not for profit groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, the Airedale and Wharfedale Autism Resource and the Senior Citizens Thursday Club to meet without worrying about paying for their rent.
Cllr Sandy Lay said: “Support services and local groups build and strengthen our communities, reducing social isolation and helping those that need it most. I am pleased that we can offer them this relief so that they can keep doing the good work they are known for.”
Cllr Colin Campbell commented: “Every year we are faced with the difficult decision between continuing to offer free rents to community groups or whether to let them lapse to save money.
“However, across the ward in both Otley and Yeadon, there are many local residents who give up their time to support other people. This is a way we felt we could help them do that the best way they can.”Leave a comment
